The Emirates Flight Training Academy will be the first of its kind, a stand-alone facility with its own fully operational private airport. Some of the features include an independent Air Traffic Control Tower, Rescue & Fire Fighting Service (RFFS), hangar, apron for more than 30 aircraft and a runway that will accommodate hundreds of movements a day.
Emirates Flight Training Academy cadets will achieve their in-flight training on the Cirrus SR22 aircraft to learn basic commercial piloting skills. Cadets will then advance to the Embraer Phenom 100EV aircraft to obtain their twin engine jet rating and their Commercial Pilot License on a multi-engine aircraft with Instrument Rating and frozen Airline Transport Pilot’s License (ATPL).
The runway is over 1800 meters long, the runway's direction and designation will be South East / North West 29-11 and it will be capable of accommodating over 400 movements a day.

- PAPI Precision Approach Path Indicators at both ends of the runway
As per international standards, runway marking will include the following:
- Runway centreline
- Runway edge light and line
- Threshold markings
- Transverse strip and arrow markings for displaced threshold
- Runway designation characters
- Distance coding markers
- Aiming point
- Runway end lights
- Wind direction/speed indicators system and lit windsock
The airport's taxiway will have a width of over 10 meters.
Taxiway markings will include:
- Taxiway centreline markings
- Taxiway edge markings and lighting
- Intermediate holding position markings and lighting
- Stop bar and runway guard markings and lighting
The airport apron will accommodate a fleet of over 30 aircraft. Each stand will have a shaded canopy.
Other features include apron floodlights and aircraft tie-down points, as well as visual aids such as taxi lane centreline, aircraft stand lead-in/out lines.
The maintenance hangar is equal in size to approximately three Olympic-sized swimming pools. It will comprise the following areas:
- The paint shop
- Aircraft wash bay area
- Sheet metal and composite workshop
- Mechanical/hydraulic workshop
- Avionics/battery workshop
- Spare parts store room
- Technical library/briefing and conference rooms
The Air Traffic Control Tower (ATCT) is dedicated to the Emirates Flight Training Academy setting this apart from any other institution. This fully functioning airside nerve centre will be able to monitor, direct and manage all the academy's ground movement, departure and arrival movement, as well as circuit pattern traffic.
A dedicated Rescue & Fire Fighting Service (RFFS) will be stationed at the airport. The RFFS will comply with ICAO (International Commercial Airline Organisation) standard category.
The academy building will be the heart of the landside section. Equipped with the latest, most advanced technology available, it will have 36 state-of-the-art classrooms, over 100 office stations for instructors, a recruitment centre, a movement and control room, simulator bays and administration offices.
The ground floor is designed with a well-equipped student innovation centre, air/ground movement control room, briefing rooms, examination rooms, dispatch room, flight watch system, conference rooms, administrative offices, a coffee shop and other ancillary rooms. The recruitment centre will be located here which includes the Aviation Medical Clinic, the pilot aptitude and psychometric assessment room and related office space.
At the heart of the simulator area will be 12 stations to provide a variety of flight simulation training, ranging from basic Flight Training Device (FTD) to Full Flight Simulators (FFS) complete with briefing rooms.
Accommodation & Facilities
Four blocks (provision for six) of modern studio apartments will be home to some 400 students with 100 students per block. Each apartment is designed as a 36 square metre studio with a living/dining area, kitchenette, bathroom, closet space, enough room for a double bed, and study station/desk.
The dining area will have a kitchen that will accommodate up to 250 people at a time and serve over 1500 meals per day.
Students will have everything they need within easy reach including a mini-clinic, coffee shop, mini-market, barber shop, laundry service, and parking area.
